Fiscal Year 2022 Annual Report

Dear friends and supporters,

Finding comfort in change was the theme for Hands On Atlanta in 2022.

The top headline is that we grew our annual budget by more than $1 million. We doubled down on tackling Atlanta’s most pressing needs and continued our focus on improving educational equity and food security. We launched a new volunteer portal (here) to make doing good easier and faster than ever before. We added more partners to our education programs, supported more students, and distributed millions more meals. We grew our engagement numbers by more than 50% from FY21, mobilizing 37,000 Atlantans to do something good. In addition, we supported huge community events like the Million Meal Pack at State Farm Arena and 9/11 Day. It all added up to 190,000 hours served across metro Atlanta.

You will also see change happening inside of Hands On Atlanta. We added 5 new full-time positions and maintained our strategic focus on our racial equity goals. Our team is now majority BIPOC (55%), with our governing board and senior leadership team at 50% BIPOC. You can meet our team, our boards and advisory council here. We bid farewell to our long-time office space in West Midtown, securing warehouse space at 970 Jefferson Street (aka the old Atlanta Community Food Bank), alongside a community of other nonprofits. Notably, this is the same building where Hands On Atlanta hosted our first ever service project in 1989. Our new, permanent, office location will be announced in FY23.

As we continue our journey to a more engaged and equitable community, we are honored that you have chosen to join us as a partner, supporter and friend. Thanks for helping us change Atlanta and ourselves over the last year!

OUR EDUCATION PARTNERS

I have seen a huge improvement in the way that my students speak to their peers and adults, as
well as how they self-regulate when dealing with their own emotions.”
— AmeriCorps SEL Coach
My students’ interest in education has definitely increased. At first, they were unsure about waking up early to learn on a Saturday. Now, it is what they look forward to.”
— Disco Parent
As I started coming to Disco more, I enjoyed it a lot. One day
when I grow up, I want to be an engineer. Disco has given me
materials that I need to be familiar with in my future job.”
— Disco Student

My colleagues and I volunteered as part of our company’s national day of service. This event was perfect because it accomodated a large group and we were able to briefly interact with the population we were serving.”
— Volunteer at C.H.O.I.C.E.S.
Food insecurity is so important and I appreciate the way Hands On Atlanta provided a bridge to solve the problem for some students this week. There will always be more we can do—but the doing is a step in the right direction!”
— Volunteer from OneDigital
When I signed up with Hands On Atlanta, I was required to complete “mandatory” community service. I chose Hugs & Hope based on their mission and availability. I honestly didn’t know what to expect, however any apprehension immediately dissipated when I met Ms Jeri Austin and her husband Paul. I was greeted warmly and welcomed with open arms and zero judgement. Kindness and caring is shown to every individual - food recipients and volunteers alike. At the onset, it was abundantly clear to me that they are committed to their cause of fighting hunger in the community with the generous donations they receive. Along with actual and virtual hugs and hope, the love is palpable and permeates throughout. I am eternally grateful to the Austin’s for allowing me to participate in their efforts. I hope that my work with their organization helped in some small way and when I am able, I would be honored to work with them again. Wishing them continued success in all endeavors. I am truly thankful, grateful and blessed to have had this opportunity. <3
