+ Story Time and Activity | 12PM – 4PM | 3rd Floor Mezzanine
Young visitors will have the opportunity to experience story time and read long with, “Who Was Martin Luther King, Jr.?” by Lisbeth Kaiser and Stanley Chow. The book is an overview of King’s life for young children, and connects The Center’s newest Dr. King exhibit, Now Is the Time: Remembering the Legacy of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom to King’s I Have a Dream speech. We link the book and theme by having the activity be a crossword puzzle based on the speech.
+ King Activity Card
The King Pledge card will be given to all ages and inspires all to act. On one side there will be an Acts of Service Challenge, where several prompts will be listed to inspire the visitor to help their community. The other side will be a small activity where visitors can choose what King stood for, alongside a QR code that has an animated version of the I Have a Dream speech (from Center partner Stanford University.)
+ Children’s Giveaway | 12PM – 4PM | 3rd Floor Mezzanine
Giveaways will also be provided for the King celebration. The Center will be handing out cards, buttons, pencils, and notebooks.
Join us at The Center on January 13, for the launch of The Center’s newest biannual King Rotation from the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr., collection.
Now Is the Time: Remembering the Legacy of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom presented during the 60th anniversary year of the March, seeks to transport you to August 28, 1963, when 250,000 Americans of all backgrounds and all parts of the country gathered on the National Mall to demand civil and economic rights. In its aftermath, the March would come to “transform the national landscape” and provide Americans with a new concept of the American dream, as defined by Dr. Martin Luther King’s soaring, iconic and improvised words: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
The exhibit will be features in The Center’s Voice to the Voiceless Gallery from January 13- June 2023.

Today, more than ever, there is a need for humanity to work towards creating a more just, humane, equitable, and peaceful world, where the Triple Evils of racism, poverty and militarism cease to exist and love prevails. To create that world, we must first change our minds and ensure that our means align with our ends. Therefore, the charge is to start with ourselves, then connect with others, in “Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems.”
Each interactive session will encompass a relevant conversation, with audience participation, on how we can collaborate (globally, strategically, and compassionately) to facilitate this transformative work. Powerful summit sessions will address:
1) Why a ‘Thought Shift’ is necessary
2) The historical biases behind the mindset that acquiesces to and perpetuates injustice;
3) What we must unlearn and relearn on the path to Beloved Community thinking;
4) The facets of a Beloved Community Mindset and why the facets are critical for us to, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “make of this old world a new world.”
5) How a transformed way of thinking leads to transformed systems, with attention to specific systems
Together, we can harness the power of this strategic convening and collaborative work to bring us closer to creating the Beloved Community – a society where injustice ceases and love prevails.

The Litte Bucket is a story to help children have a sense of their own inner wonder and connect to their own imagination.
